John Conway is a digital media pioneer and executive with 37 years of professional experience, including 25 years in digital operations. Most recently, he was Vice President of Digital at Capitol Broadcasting Company, a highly respected and innovative media company based in Raleigh, North Carolina.
In September, he semi-retired but continues to manage special projects for Capitol, such as FAST channel monetization and distribution, privacy compliance, first-party data strategy, website optimization and mobile and smart app development.
He has been involved in industry initiatives such as the Branded Content Project, Google's News Consumer Insights, the LMA/Facebook Data Journalism Project and the LMC's Broadcast Committee.
Under his leadership, Capitol's 50-person digital team exceeded industry benchmarks for audience and revenue. WRAL.com, the company's flagship website, is the state's most visited local media site.
His team launched ground-breaking digital products such as HighSchoolOT Live, which offers unparalleled coverage of high school football on Friday nights, featuring up to 8 live game streams and a 3-hour "NFL Red Zone" style studio show that attracts tens of thousands of views each week.
Conway is 1985 graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where he received a B.A. in journalism. He has worked as a newspaper reporter and editor for newspapers in Raleigh, Greensboro and Orlando. He also has held administrative positions with UNC’s Hussman School of Journalism and Media, where he launched that School's first distance education courses in 1993 while serving as Assistant Dean for Distance and Executive Education.
He has been a guest lecturer at Duke University and UNC’s Hussman School. He also has been a speaker and presenter at numerous conferences and events hosted by the NAB, LMC, LMA, Borrell & Associates and MediaPost.
